What We Do

Thomas is purchasing a new tractor for his family-owned farm!

Montiel Farms is a family owned and operated urban farm in Wichita, KS. Montiel Farms brings a unique model of urban agriculture and food systems to Wichita’s diverse communities. The business employs more than 50 individual contractors to build, grow, harvest, and sell nutritionally-dense produce and food. This labor model has allowed Montiel Farms to maximize resources while employing local people in the Wichita area. The farm is within walking distance to thousands of local residents, contributing to the farm’s success in its first year of operation.

In addition to being geographically accessible, Montiel Farms offers two unique ways for consumers to access and interact with the farm. First, the business’s “Pick and Pay” model allows customers to learn about food products and flowers on the farm site, while picking their own produce or flowers to purchase, similar to an orchard, berry, or pumpkin patch experience. Second, their “Pay What You Can” offering gives every individual, no matter their socioeconomic status, the opportunity to purchase nutritionally dense food. Montiel Farms grows for an abundance and sells at a suggested price. However, the “Pay What You Can” model broadens Montiel Farms’ customer base, while drawing respect and admiration from the broader community. Because of this model, Montiel Farms has gained recognition from individuals, partners, agencies, and non-profits who are interested in subsidizing the “Pay What You Can” model and expanding it to other farm sites with the highest rates of food insecurity in Wichita.
