Key Deal Facts
Critics Review: William Kelley in The Wine Advocate awarded the 2015 La Romanee a perfect 100 points, saying: "Tasted blind, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair's 2015 La Romanée Grand Cru is simply extraordinary, dominating a flight of great grands crus. The wine wafts from the glass with an extraordinarily complex bouquet in which notes of cherries, cassis and orange rind mingle with fragrant aromas of rose petal and Asian spices, complemented by deeper, more savory bass notes of grilled squab, espresso roast and smoked duck. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with amazing depth and dimension, juicy acids balancing a deep and concentrated core of fruit, and concluding with a long, reverberative finish. This is a powerful, even dramatic La Romanée that ranks as one of the pinnacles of this magical vintage."
History: Louis-Michel Liger-Belair founded this Domaine in 2000, but the Liger-Belair family has been making wines in Vosne-Romanee for almost 200 years; Louis Liger-Belair, a general for Napoleon, acquired the Chateau de Vosne and an impressive number of prime vineyards in 1815. The laws of inheritance in France forced the family to sell off the vineyards over time until the Domaine was reformed and vineyards re-purchased. The domaine is small but prestigious and the crown jewel of the vineyard portfolio is La Romanee of which Liger-Belair is the sole owner.
Region: All of the wines are farmed using biodynamic principles in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. La Romanee is a grand cru vineyard in the village of Vosne in Burgundy. The smallest of the grand crus at only .845 hectares in size, La Romanee lies directly next to Romanee-Conti, separated only by a small path. Less than 300 cases of La Romanee are made each year.
